Margaret gazed about the great room, her eyes lingering on the rough-sawn cedar mantle over the stone fireplace where several framed photos of her family were displayed. Then they darted about the room, resting first on an antique side table that she and John had unearthed in a second-hand shop in Winter Beach, next to a mid-century chair with its yellowed oak arms and legs and worn upholstery. She loved it all! These acquisitions were a chronicle of their shared history, each one a minor triumph to be celebrated.

They’d been so young and in love, and this house was a repository of their shared experiences. Now she had to let it all go, to shed the history and move on into the present—a solitary, sexless life without John.

“You stop that, Margaret,” John admonished. “Look on the bright side.”

“And what bright side would that be, John?” Margaret muttered as she slipped out the door.

She made her way across the lawn and out to the dock, then plunked herself down on the weathered planks. Gazing heavenward, she searched for a sign from John—to get yet another transmission from him—maybe some words of advice. Instead, all she saw was a half-moon with a few scudding clouds ghosting across it. But then wasn’t there a wispy cloud taking form, and didn't it look like a stallion with its front legs raised in flight? Leaping off an unseen precipice—isn’t that how she felt every day and night since he’d left her—alone and eager to jump into the next existence?

Wait for me, mermaid. John's voice whispered inside her head. I’ll be with you soon.

“Oh, John, if only that were true.”
